The Charm of Bali

In my experience, one of the best things about Bali is its close connection with nature.

There is a certain cohesiveness between oneself and the surrounding nature. This type of thing was completely new to me. To paint a picture for you, gorgeous wood carved doors are left open and the equally beautiful windows have holes to allow the air to flow through when closed. While the kitchen and main living space might be covered with a roof, the majority of the space is left wide open to let in the scenery and sweet smelling flowers drop their petals on the deck.

Bali is like this everywhere on all its surrounding islands. The nature is very close and the majority of structures are built to not lock it out, but instead to invite the beauty and fullness of the surrounding nature in. The lines between the outdoor and indoor living areas are melded together in harmony. I was there in the strong heat of summer and as an individual used to dwelling inside with air conditioning with only a screened window to show me the outside world, these dramatic changes took some adjustment. Yet after a while, the humidity and heat did not feel so intolerable. Practically, I adapted my wardrobe to accommodate the climate and found it enjoyable. I felt more connected to the place I was in and with the nature surrounding me.

There is an indescribable feeling when you let yourself relax and feel the sand between your toes, or let yourself rest in the song of the wind. Having the experience to touch it, smell it, see it, in real life is something special. All the money in the world cannot replicate the majesty that nature brings. Spending time dwelling in the rain forest far away from the cares of modern living brings you closer to our creator. Bali is a place of many charms and beauties, but for me, this was the most spellbinding experience. The beauty of nature, the kindness of the people, the freshness of the local, native foods, this was a great treasure to experience.
